Ancient Mural painting of Dhritarastra. Tamshing Goemba dates from 1500. According to buddhist teachings the Four Heavenly Kings, Four Great Kings, Four Guardian Kings watch over the four directions. Paintings of all four are often seen in temple and monastery entrances. Dhritarastra watches over the East. He is white. His symbols are a pipa, a stringed lute-like musical instrument. He is attended by Gandharvas, nature spirits with great musical ability. Tamshing Goemba, Bumthang, Bhutan. 16 November 2007
